Senior Congress leader VD Satheesan is seeking re-election from Paravur, a constituency he has represented for over two decades and turned into a personal stronghold.

Satheesan, who was appointed Leader of the Opposition in the Kerala Assembly in 2021, emerged as a key figure in the Congress-led United Democratic Front’s (UDF) efforts to regain political ground. His elevation was seen as a strategic move to rejuvenate the party ahead of the 2026 elections. Since then, he has led the UDF to notable victories in by-elections, the Lok Sabha polls, and local body elections, strengthening his position as a potential chief ministerial face.

In Paravur, he faces a challenge from CPI’s ET Taison Master.

The coastal constituency in Ernakulam district, with over 1.91 lakh voters, has largely favoured the Congress in recent decades. While the CPI once dominated the seat, Satheesan’s victory in 2001 marked a turning point, ending the Left’s long hold over Paravur.

A former Kerala Students Union (KSU) leader and a practising lawyer in the High Court, Satheesan began his electoral journey in Paravur with a defeat in 1996 to CPI’s P Raju. He went on to build a strong grassroots presence, cultivating an image of an accessible and approachable leader.

That groundwork translated into sustained electoral success. Since 2001, Satheesan has won five consecutive terms from Paravur, with his victory margins steadily increasing. In both 2016 and 2021, he crossed the 20,000-vote mark, underlining his dominance even during challenging political cycles for the Congress.

In the 2021 Assembly election, he secured over 82,000 votes, defeating CPI’s MT Nixon by more than 21,000 votes.

According to his 2026 affidavit filed before the Election Commission, Satheesan has declared assets worth around Rs 3 crore, including movable and immovable properties.
