Union Minister L Murugan is contesting the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections from the Avanashi (SC) constituency in Tiruppur district, marking a high-profile entry into a seat that has long been considered an AIADMK stronghold.

A senior BJP leader and Union Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting, Murugan brings national-level visibility to the contest. His candidature comes after the AIADMK ceded the seat to its ally BJP, significantly altering the political dynamics in the constituency.

Murugan, who hails from western Tamil Nadu, contested the 2021 Assembly elections from Dharapuram but lost. In 2026, he shifted to Avanashi, banking on alliance support as well as his growing profile within the BJP. His nomination is also politically significant, with the party projecting him as one of the prominent leaders from the Scheduled Caste community to hold a Union ministerial position.

The Avanashi constituency, spread across Tiruppur and Coimbatore districts, is socially and politically complex, with a sizeable Scheduled Caste population, particularly the Arunthathiyar community, alongside influential OBC groups. This demographic mix has made the seat a key battleground, especially as parties attempt to consolidate caste and community-based support.

Murugan faces a multi-cornered contest against DMK’s V Kokilamani, a young doctor making her political debut, as well as candidates from TVK and NTK. While the BJP is relying on the AIADMK’s traditional support base to transfer votes, the presence of new entrants and shifting voter preferences has made the race more competitive than in previous elections.

For the BJP, Murugan’s candidature represents an attempt to expand its footprint in western Tamil Nadu by leveraging both alliance strength and leadership visibility.

Candidate Info: Dr L Murugan is the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate contesting from Avanashi (Scheduled Caste) Assembly constituency for the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. This male candidate is 48 years of age, according to the election affidavit submitted to the Election Commission of India.
